Pulse reading is the main diagnostic tool a Chinese Medicine practitioner utilizes to assess a patient’s overall health condition. By palpating the patient’s radial pulse, the practitioner evaluates both the quality of the circulatory system and the meridian system of Chinese Medicine. From this the practitioner can draw correlations between the quantity of blood circulation and the health of specific organs, tissues and joints.
The abdominal diagnosis is a reading that assesses vital organs held within the container of the abdomen. In understanding the abdominal environment, the practitioner gains a deeper insight into the root treatment of organs, surrounding muscles, tissues and interstitial space.
The tongue reading is a third type of assessment tool in Chinese Medicine. The tongue is an extension of the digestive system. It reflects the root of 5 organ systems in the body. Through inspection of specific tongue qualities, a practitioner can discern the environment of the body, and whether it is in proper balance – is it hot or cold, damp or dry, deficient or blocked in circulation ?
