Pilates Reformers
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of body conditioning developed by Joseph Pilates more than 70 years ago. Comprised of over 500 exercises, it is performed as a mat-based workout or using special resistance equipment including the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Wunda Chair, and the Spine Corrector. Each piece of equipment allows the pilates trainer to direct detail in your muscle movement. Individual articulation of each vertebrae is carefully performed to develop proper muscle coordination and grace. Even muscular movement in the toes and fingers is deliberate and directed.
Executing the proper structure of movement is similarly essential in the mat work. The coordination of breath, the timing of inhalation and exhalation, and the order of muscular activation reflect German precision. Because of this precision, Pilates produces results that creates devotees of all body types, all ages, all levels.
How will my body change?
The central concept of Pilates training is to strengthen the “Powerhouse”, the core of the body. This includes the deep abdominal muscles, buttock muscles and the muscles around the spine. In Pilates, all body movement is initiated from the Powerhouse, requiring stabilization of the pelvis and shoulder girdle. This unified movement stretches and strengthens the entire body. Flowing movement and concentration engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously.
Traditional training methods produce shorter muscles – a type of musculature more prone to injury. Pilates elongates the spine by increasing the elasticity of fascia and muscles. Dramatic spine strength and joint flexibility in balance create a more functional and free body.

What is Soma Pilates at 8EW?
In SomaPilates we create new movement patterns in the nervous system according to how the nervous system develops from the ground up – beginning with laying on your back as an infant, then rolling over, to becoming quadriped, finally to standing. This system of training re-organizes your structure to restore natural function of the body.
What is Pilates Barre at 8EW?
Pilates Barre focuses on opening 3 major energy gateways of the body – the Pelvis, Chest and Head. Deep toning in the stomach, hips and legs supports full movement and strength of the spine, the supporting structure of these 3 centers. Particular movements offer release of the psoas muscle, a deep muscle in the hip and lower back that can limit movement, overactivate the nervous system and shorten the spine. Barre work is wonderful for beginners to get used to engaging the core muscles, both systemically and in isolation. Barre exercise are a wonderful adjunct to any movement program.

What is the difference between Mat-work and the Equipment?
Joseph Pilates developed exercises for the mat to strengthen your core, the powerhouse. On the mat, gravity and your own body weight offer resistance. The basic strength of mat work is essential for all machine work. The Pilates machines add resistance with the use of springs. These springs mimic a muscular contraction. The Reformer, the Cadillac (or trap table), and the Foot Chair are basic machines developed by Joseph Pilates. These build your strength, balance, flexibility, body awareness and control like never before.
History
Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 to a prize-winning gymnast father and a mother who subscribed to naturopathic healing. As a child, Joseph suffered from several health ailments: asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. In his effort to restore his own health, he studied anatomy books and observed wild animals. READ MORE.
“Take a horse,” began his discussion on body conditioning, “If a man wants to race him, he keeps him in top form. He makes the horse move. Why not keep humans in top form too?” Joseph studied Eastern disciplines like yoga and martial arts, and blended them with Western disciplines like bodybuilding, gymnastics, and boxing as well as ancient Greek and Roman forms of fitness practices. Through his own meticulous program, by the age of fourteen he had trained his physique to such a degree that he posed for anatomical drawings. Today, this is the same program used for athletes, dancers, injuries, and the conditioning of all bodies for core strength and spine health.
