Somato-Emotional Release

Why try SER ?

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is the expression and discharge of emotion from the body’s tissues. These are emotions that, for reasons formerly deemed appropriate by the unconscious, have been retained, supressed and isolated in the soma. Observation of the SER process suggests that the energy and memory of emotional and physical trauma retained separate from full conscious awareness of the client is accomplished by “storage” in the body’s tissues – specific body parts, regions, or viscera. The benefit to the client is the release of underlying physical or emotional distress, and the resulting return of balance and inner well-being. The client may gather insights regarding physcial or emotional symptoms that have been chronic for years. Mild improvement to the complete disappearance of symptoms offers the possibility of a full return to health.

A Secure Environment

The SER session is first initiated through permission given by the client, who understands the process to be an intimate conversation with the nonconscious that ensues through verbal dialogue, movement of the tissues generated by the client, and/or movement generated by the therapist. This process continues by permission given through touch by the therapist/facilitator. This non-verbal mutual agreement is expressed through the client’s tissues, moment by moment. It is experienced not only as consent but as a softening acceptance that, with the therapist’s support, gives way to the passage of the emotions through the tissues to be discharged from the body. For the SER process to be undertaken by the client-therapist team, there must already be a high degree of trust between the two. The therapist must be sincere in his/her presence to help, and to be willing to surrender to where the client’s process leads them both. There is no room in this process for directive activity nor for a judgmental attitude by the therapist. The therapist may present to the client a series of “check-in” conversational openings to promote honesty, dedication, approachabilty and accuracy of dialogue and communications. Similarly, this offers time for the therapist to clear his/her own bodymind to become the most clear channel possible for the client’s resolution and release.

For Your SER Visits

SER is a form of hands-on work performed on the body. The client wears loose, comfortable clothing. Please do not eat large, heavy meals and avoid alcohol prior to your visit. Come well hydrated, and do your best to get a good night’s sleep before and after. If needed, your session may also be received in conjunction with other therapeutic techniques.
