How Can Somatic Saturdays Help Me?

Somatics is the sensory experience of yourself – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually – through your body. Because your body records your personal history in your tissues and biology, Somatic Awareness of your body is your primary preventative wellness tool. The techniques in somatic work involve sensory-based guidance for wellness and healing. This includes sound, touch, scents, vision, movement, sensation and breath. Historically, health practitioners performed psychotherapy only by observing the movement of a patient’s pulse while listening to their anguish. Today, Somatic work is emerging rapidly in fields of study such as cognitive and social neuroscience, substantiating the importance of an unconscious mind that ‘speaks’ through the language of the sensory body.

Traditional linear applications of talk or medicinal cures are challenged by the understanding that the self is reflected through the body and the senses. This premise assumes we are self-healing organisms by nature, and that any remedy can be activated in the nervous system through one’s own Somatic Attention.

We can apply Somatic Attention to the very foundation of our life experience which is deeply recorded in the body’s tissues, nervous system and brain during the pre-verbal period of life (before age 2). This non-verbal period establishes our autonomic (body) regulation and emotional resilience. Somatic techniques work with non-verbal expressions that mark the deepest of human communications, those which formed in the first years of life. In these early formations we build the foundation of our perceptions for how we interact with the world, for what we believe about our sense of physical/mental power and personal safety, and for our ability to contact the subtle strength of our own emotional goodness.

Unconscious psychological social, cultural and political pressures can contribute to the fragmentation of our foundations. As these forces affect biological, mental, and relational well-being, they cause one to construct the false feeling of well-being through medications, food, and drink. But ultimately the body rebels by piercing these self-deceptive suppressive constructs with chronic symptoms. What the mind wont admit, the body always reveals. With Somatic Awareness, rather than ignoring or avoiding symptoms we lend curiosity to their important and direct messages. Gradually, in engaging Somatic Attention we gain a lasting deeper expression of our most authentic genuine self.
