Abdominal Manipulation

What is Abdominal Manipulation (AM)?

Gloria Gonzalez, SEP, LMT, Visceral Manipulation

Abdominal Manipulation release tension in the ligaments and fascia of the body’s organs. Gentle manipulations free the internal organs to move and glide freely. While the most common cause of the lack of motion in the organs is everyday stress, other causes may include illness, trauma, and inherited factors.

How was it developed?

Centuries ago, AM was originally began in China and Tibet, then spread throughout Europe and Asia. In the 1970’s Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral, a French osteopath, re-developed these ancient techniques into over 8 trainings now offered through the Upledger Institute as “Visceral Manipulation”. Dr. Barral has been internationally recognized as a leading innovator in the wave of alternative medicines. According to Barral, “In a single day, your internal organs move 30,000 times. Your liver alone travels 600 meters.” Restrictions in this natural motion can, over time, create pain and inflammation. Chronic irritation, in turn, paves the way for disease and dysfunction.

What can I expect?

AM sessions are typically 50 minutes and the work is done both seated and lying down. The therapist “listens” with their hands to evaluate the movement and restrictions of specific organs. Soft manual releases free the ligaments and fascial tissue of the restricted organ to restore normal motility, mobility and function.

What are the benefits?

AM can alleviate back pain, digestive disturbances, recurring infections, migraines, allergies, TMJ, and any chronic issue. Working with organs relaxes and rebalances the body’s entire nervous system, releasing serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter. AM is extremely relaxing, and is highly recommended as an excellent adjunct to craniosacral therapy, somato-emotional release, and deep tissue massage.
